Respond to the Chapter 9 questions about realistic contemporary fiction in the comments below:
- Define Contemporary realist fiction. What is the value of contemporary realistic fiction?
- Select two the categories of realistic fiction. Identify a book from each category. Give a brief summary of the book and explain why it is a part of that realistic contemporary fiction category.
1.) Contemporary Realistic Fiction is derived from actual circumstances with realistic settings and characters who face problems and opportunities that are within the range of what is possible in real life. Some values may be: They may come to feel that they are not alone. They may learn to reflect on the choices in their own lives. They may develop empathy for other people. They may see life experiences beyond their own. They may take a humorous, enjoyable look at life.
ReplyDelete2.) Two categories: Books about Families and Family Diversity and Books about Self-Discovery and Growing up.
Books about Families and Family Diversity, Afternoon of Elves is one book which is about a girl named Hillary who is enchanted by Sara-Kate's imagination and talent for creating a tiny world for "elves" in her junky backyard. What Hillary begins to realize is that Sara-Kate does not have adults who take care of her. This story is when parents who are incapable of taking care of their child force us to reconsider the definition of family.
Books about Self-Discovery and Growing Up- Ida B is when sometimes, life seems to be going "your way" a change in circumstances forces you to grow up. In Ida B, a fourth grader Ida B is an indulged only child; in addition, home schooling has allowed her to march to her own drummer at her own pace for her elementary years. When her mothers' cancer changes their family circumstances, she must adjust to public school and the sale part of their family property. Ida B must learn to deal with her anger and feelings of betrayal as she has lessons on growing up imposed on her.
What are the chances that you found a book with a character named Hilllary! :) Both books sound very interesting to me! They both have very realistic circumstances that students could relate to or emotional connect to for further understanding! Good work!
DeleteContemporary realist fiction includes stories that can happen to people. Stories can take place in the world, as we know it today. The actions and feelings are similar to ourselves, as well as, the people we know. They raise moral questions that a reader might face in real life and they have certain characteristics.
ReplyDeleteThe value of contemporary realistic fiction is when child readers recognize something in the story that is similar to their own feelings or thoughts, they realize they are not alone. Realistic fiction helps readers to empathize with other people. Realistic fiction offers readers the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the literature.
The categories that I have chose for realistic fiction include “Series Books” and “Books with Multicultural and International Themes.” For “Series Books” the book does not really go into depth and does not provide necessary resources. Series Books are part of realistic contemporary fiction because they are popular with children and take the guesswork out of choosing something to read. Series books use good language, engaging themes, and well-rounded characters to give substance to the plots.
My second Category is Books with Multicultural and International Themes and the book that I have chosen is “Jingle Dancer.” “Jingle Dancer” is part of realistic contemporary fiction because the book portrays real-life experiences of people growing up in different cultures, outside the mainstream cultures of North America. My mom would say living in two-worlds.
I love that you picked series books. Magic Treehouse and Boxcar children are very popular. My kids read all the Magic Treehouse books and continued to read the newly published well past the time they were at that reading level. (Did you forget to name your choice of series book?) Great pick on 'Jingle Dancer'! I love this book! Their are so many positive components in that book that students can connect to themselves.
DeleteContemporary realistic fiction brings the same moral challenges as other types could be of fiction. It present these challenges in a here and now setting and in a way that says "Hey- this is happening. You or somebody near you could be going through these very experiences". The value of contemporary realistic fiction is the reader may learn to reflect on the choices in their own lives, they may develop empathy for other people, and they may come to feel that they are not alone.
ReplyDeleteTwo categories that I have chosen are Books about self-discovery and growing up and Books about social diversity and society.
Books about self-discovery and growing up, "Ira Sleeps over" in which he answered unasked questions of young children such as am I the only one who sleeps with a teddy bear? Ira of course, discovers he is not.
Books about social diversity and society, "Junebug" is a book about a boys life who dreams of a big future but fears, as his tenth birthday approaches, that the local gangs and drug dealers will be pressuring him to join them.
Love this-"Hey- this is happening. You or somebody near you could be going through these very experiences".
DeleteIra Sleeps Over is an excellent book!! Junebug is new to me and sound very interesting! Good choices.
