Questions for Traditional literature: Chapter 7

Questions for Chapter 7: Please respond in the comment section of the blog. 
  1. Select a story that is discussed in this chapter and describe why it is traditional literature.
  2. Identify one type of folk literature and define it. Then find an internet site that depicts this type of literature.

  • Select a book and do genre study sheet for a Traditional literature Due March 10
  • Read chapter 11-30 in The Tiger Rising with at least 12 VIP Strips. Do a "little" character book. Due March 10
  • Midterm Projects almost done so final questions will be ready by next class. Projects will be presented on March 17.

  • No class Monday, March 3...Spring Break...but you do have assignments due.

For class on Monday, February 24


  1. Read Chapters 11-20 in The Tiger Rising so you are ready for the literature discussion. Use sticky notes and the VIP sheet to help you with ideas to focus on. Also read the Discussion Questions at the end of the book can help guide or inspire your thoughts.  (Go to http://prairiepublic.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/63aad5f6-2d48-4ad5-b803-31d084ad4670/63aad5f6-2d48-4ad5-b803-31d084ad4670/ and watch the videos on literature circles if you were not in class when we view the literature discussion video.)
  2. Decide on your mid-term project and begin putting it together!
  3. Finish any late work ASAP!! Then I can get it entered in before mid-term grades are submitted.
  4. Your binder should be put together and you are adding genre information as we go.
  5. View the story Officer Buckle and Gloria below ... answer the quiz questions about how the text and pictures work together to enhance comprehension. (Quiz is on Edmodo.)
  6. Read Chapter 6: Poetry ... and respond to the following questions in the comment section of this blog.
  7. Do the genre study form for poetry. Bring the book and be ready to present in class.

Questions for Chapter 6:

1. Select a poet from chapter 6 and describe why their poetry appeals to you. Be specific.
2. The chapter discusses using poetry with children in the classroom. What do you think is most important when using poetry in the classroom to develop children's love for poetry? Describe in detail how you would do this as a teacher.

For Class on Monday, February 10

For class on Monday, February 10, you will need to:

1.  Respond to the following questions in the blog posts for Chapters 3&4 along with an article reading assignment.

2. Read Chapters 1-10 in The Tiger Rising and be prepared to discuss in a literature discussion:
  •  author's purpose and main ideas
  •  connections that you made while reading to other text or to your personal experiences
  • story structure elements such as: characters, setting, problem/solution
3. Log on to Edmodo and do the poll and the quiz for the video of Teachings of Jon (posted in an earlier blog.)

4. Do a genre book-study for picture books and be ready to present in class. (See video of a model in earlier post.)
