Historical Fiction questions-Due Monday, March 31

1. Define historical fiction. What is the value of historical fiction?

2. Select two  historical fiction novels/books. Give a brief summary of each book and explain why it is a part of the historical fiction category. Identify a website that might support the use of each book in the classroom.

  1. 1. Historical fiction is a work of fiction set in a time prior to when it was written and the setting is drawn from history. The value of historical fiction is so children can "step into" the stories during that perceived time period for a rich experience.

    2. One book that I have chosen is "The Witch of Blackbird Pond." Katherine "Kit" Tyler escaped Barbados after her Grandfather dies and is on her new found journey to reconnect with her Aunt Rachael of Connecticut. Kit sails on the "Dolphin" from her free life of Barbados to the strict environment of Connecticut. Along the way she makes friends with a sailor, the captain's son, and a student-preacher on his way to Connecticut as well. Upon arrival, Kit finds herself in an environment that she had never knew existed. "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" is historical fiction because it shows how people lived in a particular time and how they lived in a particular way.

Another book that I have chosen is "Island of the Blue Dolphins" written by Scott O'Dell. The book is about a girl named Karana and she is left alone on an island with her brother. I kind of remember reading this in school but cant fully remember the whole story. This story is part historical fiction because it is based on westward movement in the U.S. and I believe it is a true a story.

  2. 1.) Historical fiction is widely defined as a work of fiction set in a time prior to when it was written. There are many values of historical fiction, one that I like is children are naturally curious about the past, and historical fiction answers to some of their questions. Also, historical fiction may help readers develop consciousness of how time and place influenced who they are.
2.) One of the two books I have chosen is "Morning Girl". This is a chapter book that explores the Columbus story from Taino point of view.
The other book I have chosen is "Freedom Summer". This book features a friendship between two young boys, one Black and the other who is White. When the local pool is filled with asphalt instead of integrating it, Joe begins to realize what segregation means to his friend.
Websites I have found for each of the books I have chosen:

    "Freedom Summer"-http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-689-83016-7
