Chapter 13: Inviting Children into Literature: Classroom
Libraries, Read-Alouds, and Storytelling
Identify one area that the author discusses about classroom
libraries that you feel is important. Why?
What do you feel is critical when planning or doing a
read-aloud? Why?
Why is storytelling an art? What do you feel would be
important for you to prepare if you were to use storytelling in your classroom?
1.) One area of classroom libraries that is discussed is the shelving displays both spines and covers of books. The book says “bookshelves that display only the spines of books are necessary because they hold a lot of books. But, the spines of the books don’t make for interesting viewing, so it is also necessary to display book covers.” I believe this is important because a child will read a book that draws his or her attention. I don’t believe in “never judge a book by its cover”, because with this expression, only referring to books and not as a metaphor to other things, it is important what a book may look like. A child will most likely choose a book that looks interesting and may or may not have a lot going on with the cover.
ReplyDelete2.) I believe when planning or doing a read-aloud it is critical to choose a book that is appropriate for the level of reading. Also, I think it is important to introduce a story before reading it to the classroom.
3.) In my opinion, storytelling is an art because all around the world we share stories. If you take “Cinderella” for example, there are so many different Cinderella stories in the world, some are in different languages and in these stories Authors write the story in their own culture, but the Cinderella story, no matter what culture it is being written, has the same concept in some way with any Cinderella story.
I think it would be important to practice the story before story telling to my classroom. Being in Children’s literature class this semester, made me realize I have a lot of practicing to do with my story telling. I think it is very important to know the story before you read it. I want my student to want to listen to the story and maybe grow a bond or grow to love the story. Before I can achieve that I need to work on changing my voice to fit in with the characters and so on.
1. The area that the author discusses that I feel is the most important is that the library center includes books from the school and public library. I feel that dual partnership is very important because it offers unlimited resources and a variety of materials for students and teachers.
ReplyDelete2. The most critical aspect of implementing a read-aloud is the supplements that the teacher provides after the reading. Is this read-aloud that the teacher shared enjoyable and is the teacher making connections between the story and real-life? I find that this is the most critical piece to the puzzle of an effective read-aloud.
3. Storytelling is an art because the teller is sharing a narrative, interpretive experience. Storytellers share their events and paint imaginary images with the listeners to keep them engaged. As a teacher the most important feature that I would focus on will be experience. Storytelling in my classroom would come from personal experience. I would use journals to help students and myself prepare for our storytelling experience.
