  1. How do books make a difference in beliefs and attitudes?

I believe that books can shape each child’s personality and shape their personal beliefs. While opening up the child’s perspective and changing their personal attitudes towards diversity. I believe that books can idealistically bring children and families closer to create a bond. Books can create long lasting relationships.

Personally, I feel that one does not have to be a member of a culture to write about it. Some of the best children literature authors are non-members. I feel though one should be accurate and authentic to write about a certain culture because all cultures are not the same.

  2. I believe books make a difference in attitude and beliefs not only in children but also in everyone’s mind. Reading a book is such a great experience and can take you to a whole other world. I believe it allows children to open their imagination in a healthy way. Books can nurture ones mind and open their attitudes toward different ideas. Such ideas include different beliefs, culture, and traditions. Reading books is a great way to receive information about different cultures and traditions around the world. That being said, it may change the viewpoint of the reader’s attitude towards cultural differences.

I do not agree with the statement that one has to be a member of the culture to write about it. What I can say is that I would feel offended if an author chose to write a “grandfather” story or a biography about the Chippewa Tribe and the story was completely inaccurate or just a little untrue. I believe an Author can write about anything he or she desires. I wouldn’t want to be an Author and told I can only write about certain things. Therefor, I would support the Authors choice of writing about another culture other than his or her own, as long as he was truthful and knew exactly what he was writing about.

    1. You have a perfect response to the right-to-write question! You stated your viewpoint and supported it with examples and details along with your own final conclusion! Nicely done!! Also... Love this sentence, "That being said, it may change the viewpoint of the reader’s attitude towards cultural differences."
