Art and text are integrated to create a “satisfying whole” by exemplifying is the story written according to appropriate standards. Is the text skillfully and artfully crafted according to literary elements? Are all visual elements incorporated to communicate through text and illustrations? Finally, do the pictures interact with the text? If so does the text and pictures illuminate, and magnify each other? These are some ways to create a “satisfying whole” by evaluating picture books.

The category of picture books that I have chosen is Concept Books. Concept books cover a wide range of topics that interest children in an enjoyable way. I can integrate Concept Books in my classroom to help introduce or reinforce valuable information and connecting my students’ to real life experiences.

  2. Art and text are integrated to create a “satisfying whole” in a variety of ways. First, colors and shapes play a big role in picture books. Having pictures to go along with the story make it so much more fun. Art work in a book allows you to get a better picture of what the characters would look like, or when the text says “She was fumed with anger”, it gives you an idea of just how mad she looked, or something in that sort. Photography in a book gives you a sense of realism. Art and text combines make a great whole.

The category of picture books that I chose would “Alphabet Books.” A traditional alphabet book shows one-on-one correspondence between a letter and an object whose name begins with that letter. I would use this category in my classroom by combining it into other different picture books such as counting books. There are so many different ideas and creative projects that I can prepare to make it a fun and educational learning experience for my students.

    1. Way to refer to the textbook in your answers...especially the specific examples. Way to be thinking "creatively" about your projects!
